Pressure is being put on Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft by the American Civil Liberties Union to allow the organization to begin collecting signatures to put Missouri’s new abortion law to a public vote.
The executive director of ACLU of Missouri, Tony Rothert said yesterday the group will start acting as soon as next week in asking people to call Ashcroft’s office to pressure him to process the petition.
The ACLU would need to collect more than one hundred thousand signatures by August 28th to put the law on hold until a public vote in 2020.
A spokesperson for Ashcroft’s office says they are following the process described in statute.
