MU Building Facing Demolition

University of Missouri officials announced today [Thursday] that Pickard Hall, one of the original buildings on the quadrangle, will be demolished due to lingering and unacceptable levels of radioactivity.

According to University officials, a professor conducted experiments involving radium in the early 1900s in the hall. The experiments continued for around 20 years in the basement of the building.

The university submitted a final plan to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for demolition of the building. If it is approved, the university will have two years to complete the demolition process.
