Major League Baseball is canceling opening day after lockout talks collapsed just hours before management’s deadline.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced last (Tuesday) night he is canceling the first 2 series of the season that was set to start March 31st, dropping the schedule from 162 games to likely 156 games at most.

Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations.

The announcement knocks the St. Louis Cardinals opening trip to Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs off the schedule, however leaves the home openers on April 7th against the Pirates on the calendar.

This is the 9th work stoppage in baseball history and is the first time in 27 years the sport will lose regular-season games over a labor dispute.
