Mexico High School Academic Team Defends Top Ranking At Washington Tournament With Another Clean Sweep

The Mexico High School Academic team won the Washington Tournament championship on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Mexico A entered the tournament ranked 17th in the nation and the top-seeded team in the 48 team field.

Camden Williams was once again the top scorer through five games with powers in 100 tossups, averaging 186 points per game.

Mexico A cleared the morning pools, going 5-0 with wins over Holt A, Hannibal, Francis Howell, Baylesss and Calvary Lutheran. Mexico B won their first two games of the day over Orchard Farm B and Calvery Lutheran B.

Mexico A entered the playoff bracket. In Round 6 Camden Williams scored 195 points, leading his team to a win over Clopton A.

In Round 7, Williams scored 210 points, leading the Bulldogs to 550-0 shutout victory over Sullivan A, the team that beat the Bulldogs last year to take 2nd in the Class 5 State Tournament.

Mexico proceeded to take down St. Joseph in Round 8 Central A with Williams putting up 205 points.

Round 9 Williams led the way scoring 155 points in a win over Parkway West.

Mexico beat Fair Grove 435-180 in Round 10 with Williams scoring 160 points.

The Bulldogs completed the 11 game sweep in the championship round with a 470-195 win over Parkway West.

This was Mexico’s fourth tournament win in five tournaments to start the season.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday, December 9th at Columbia College as the best teams compete in the state converge for the MOQBA Fall Championship.

Coach Dale Schenewerk heads into next weekend on the doorstep of 500 career victories with a record of 494-302.

Mexico A consisted of junior captain Camden Williams and sophomores Meredith Harter and Zellen Duncan while Mexico B consisted of Alexia Femrite, Aubrey Lee, Hunter Feger, Jude Yancey, Rynn Duncan and Trinity Bush.
