NHS began in 1921 with the support of the National Association of Secondary Principals (NASSP) and a vision from D. Edward Rynearson, principal of a high school in Pennsylvania.

His goal for NHS was to create an organization that support student scholarship as well as service, leadership, and character in the young minds of our nation.

Today there are over 16,000 active chapters.
