The former editor of the Mexico Ledger was killed during a deadly shooting in Platte County on Friday, January 10, 2025.
According to initial reports of the incident from Fox 4,KC.com, Kansas City police officers were dispatched to the area of the off-ramp of I-29 and Northwest 72nd Street after a vehicle was seen running off the roadway.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a car south of Northwest 72nd Street.
It was off the highway on the southbound side and down an embankment against a barrier fence on the outer road.
Officers approached the car and found a man, later identified by the Platte County Sheriff’s Department as 50-year-old Liberty resident Dennis A. Sharkey, who appeared to have been shot and unresponsive inside.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead.
Sharkey was a sports reporter at a local newspaper, The Platte County Citizen.
Prior to that Sharkey was the editor at the Mexico Ledger where he worked from April 2023 to February 2024 before returning to work as a sports reporter at The Platte County Citizen.
Kansas City Police Department Detectives are currently working to determine what may have led to the shooting.
A GoFundMe has been created to help cover expenses.
