Former Boone deputy, files lawsuit
A former employee of the Boone County Courthouse has filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination and retaliation.
Edward Lopez started working as a Deputy Marshal at the Boone County Courthouse on June 9, of this year.
Lopez filed the lawsuit after being fired in September, saying courthouse leaders fostered a mismanaged and unprofessional workplace.
The suit names Marshal Michael Franks and Sergeant Aaron Hopper, alleging racial remarks, ignored misconduct, and that Lopez was told not to report drugs found on a detainee.
the suit states that when Lopez found methamphetamine on a detainee, Hopper allegedly told him that “we don’t do cop s***, Mike doesn’t want us doing this.”
The lawsuit also claimed that Hopper had missed the meth while searching the detainee.
Lopez says he was later terminated after filing an HR complaint.
The case seeks damages and reinstatement, and an outside judge will be assigned since the local judge recused themselves.
