Man Jailed After Firing Deputy’s Service Weapon

A Jefferson City man is behind bars after firing his girlfriend’s service weapon at his home.

Police say 42-year-old Samuel Nevarez took a Cole County deputy’s issued gun and fired two shots from the back deck of his house Sunday afternoon.

Neighbors called 911 after hearing the gunfire.

Investigators say the deputy told them Nevarez did not have permission to use the gun.

A breath test showed Nevarez’s blood alcohol level at .228.

Officers later found the Glock pistol under a bed.

Nevarez faces charges of stealing a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon while intoxicated.

He’s being held without bond in the Cole County Jail.
