Cole County breaks ground on new $14M juvenile center

Cole County is investing $14 million in a new juvenile center in Jefferson City.

County leaders broke ground Tuesday afternoon on the facility along St. Mary’s Boulevard.

Officials say the current Prenger Center is nearly 30 years old and no longer meets demand.

The new building will expand detention space from three to eight cells and include updated areas for intake, exercise, and supervision.

Presiding Commissioner Sam Bushman calls it “a good addition for Jefferson City and Cole County.”

The old facility will be sold once the new one opens expected in spring 2027.
