Drivers in Columbia should prepare for major traffic changes as Providence Road over Interstate 70 closes for five months beginning in late May.
The Missouri Department of Transportation says demolition of the overpass and pedestrian bridge will begin the night of May 29, reducing I-70 traffic to one lane in each direction and cutting off access to Providence Road from the interstate.
Several ramps will also close during the project, with signed detours in place.
MoDOT says the new bridge will be longer and higher to accommodate a future third lane on I-70 and taller vehicles, while also adding pedestrian improvements and decorative features as part of the Rocheport to Columbia expansion project.
