Cole County Judge Throws Out Proposed Gerrymandering Amendment

A Cole County judge has thrown out a gerrymandered congressional map designed to pick up another seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, saying that it violates the single subject amendment rule, deeming it unconstitutional.

The measure would have appeared as Amendment 6, and would have also prevented lawmakers from weakening citizen initiative and referendum powers.

The group that initially collected signatures for the proposal, Respect Missouri Voters, is expected to appeal the decision quickly before the September 8 deadline.
