Riley Strain Family Appeals Lawsuit Dismissal

The family of former University of Missouri student Riley Strain is appealing the dismissal of their wrongful death lawsuit.

Strain disappeared during a trip to Nashville in March 2024 and was later found dead in the Cumberland River. His death was ruled an accidental drowning.

The family filed suit in 2025 against Delta Chi Fraternity, its members and others.

A Boone County judge dismissed the case in July on procedural grounds, without determining whether the defendants were at fault.

The family’s appeal challenges that dismissal, including claims involving alleged negligence and abandonment by Strain’s fraternity brothers.
