Columbia Utility Rates Increase

Columbia residents will see higher utility costs starting Thursday, as the city works to keep up with rising operating expenses.

Electric usage rates are increasing six percent, while water rates will rise 10 percent for both base and usage fees. City officials say the average three-bedroom home could see its electric bill increase about 12 dollars, with the total utility bill rising around 15 dollars.

Sewer rates are being restructured with no overall increase for now, while solid waste rates are also increasing.

Utilities Director Erin Keys says the additional revenue will help maintain existing systems and fund projects, including two new electric substations.
