Columbia Considers New Animal Shelter, Flock Saftey, and New Park

Columbia and Boone County could purchase a new government-run animal shelter for nearly one million dollars.

The Columbia City Council is scheduled to consider the purchase Monday evening.

The proposal calls for Boone County to contribute 400-thousand dollars, with the city paying 595-thousand for the former Columbia Animal Hospital on Boone Industrial Drive.

The new facility would provide animal control, sheltering and veterinary services, as the Central Missouri Humane Society plans to end its current contract after 2027.

The council is also scheduled to set a public hearing on the city’s Flock Safety cameras.

The council is also scheduled to consider accepting an 80-acre donated park called Boone Horizon Trails

The Frank W. Morris Memorial Trust values the property at an estimated 3-point-8 million dollars.

Plans include 7-point-85 miles of trails, a 40-car parking lot and a permanent restroom. The proposed park is intended to offer outdoor recreation opportunities, including mountain biking and hiking.
