Halloween Sex Offender Enforcement

It’s a busy day for area law enforcement officials as they attempt to monitor registered sex offenders in the state.

Registered sex offenders are not allowed to take part in most Halloween rituals.

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to monitor registered sex offenders ahead of Halloween.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri says 19 defendants were charged during October with either failing to register as required or committing federal child exploitation offenses.

The enforcement effort was conducted through Project Safe Childhood and the U.S. Marshals Service’s Operation Lights Out, which targets registered sex offenders prohibited from participating in Halloween activities, including welcoming trick-or-treaters.

Officials say the effort is aimed at protecting children and keeping communities safe.
