One man is dead after a chase that began in Jefferson City and continued into Callaway County ended in gunfire today. [Thursday]
The Jefferson City Police Department reports they attempted to stop a silver Ford and a pursuit began that continued into Callaway County with speeds in excess of 75 miles per hour.
The Callaway County Sheriff’s office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol became involved and the vehicle was stopped using spike strips just north of New Bloomfield on Highway 54.
The suspect then exited the vehicle, firing a gun at the officers, who returned fire.
The suspect then fled into the woods.
Before a perimeter could be set up to begin a search for the suspect, he reappeared, then suffered a fatal gunshot wound at the scene.
It is unclear if the suspect was struck by gunfire from law enforcement or if the injury was self-inflicted.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
