Mexico Public Safety Press Release On Fire At Mexico Animal Shelter
About 30 dogs and cats were safely removed from the Mexico Animal Shelter following a fire during the morning hours of Thursday, December 14, 2023.
Mexico Public Safety responded to the shelter in the 100 block of Morris Street just before 10:30 am and found an outside wall burning and fire in the attic.
Mexico Public Safety Department, Shelter staff, and numerous volunteers removed all the animals out of the building and found places for them to stay temporarily.
The fire was contained and extinguished with the south portion of the building suffering significant fire damage and the north section suffering smoke and water damage.
There were no injuries from the incident.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
City staff is working to resume animal control and shelter operations as soon as possible.
