Amish Retreat Operator Indicted on Abuse, Trafficking Charges

A Cooper County grand jury has indicted a man accused of abusing people for years at an Amish retreat he operated.

Forty-two-year-old Sam Shetler now faces 10 charges, including trafficking for forced labor, kidnapping, sexual abuse and involuntary manslaughter.

Investigators say he held people against their will, forced them to work without pay and had unwanted sexual contact with women and girls.

Court documents also allege Shetler misled the community about having medical expertise, contributing to an infant’s death.

He’s being held without bond in the Cooper County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned May 11.
