The Moberly Spartans claimed the Class 4 District 8 Championship Friday night with a 2-0 win over Southern Boone.
The Eagles opened the game with a two-out double from Nolan Ash, but he was stranded in the first inning.
Moberly answered with a couple of walks in the bottom of the frame but they too were held without a run.
Southern Boone added another double in the second as Zac Henson, who went one-for-two with a walk, laced a ball to the left-center field gap. But, Henson was stranded after Moberly pitcher Max Richardson punched out a couple of batters in the inning, Two of the three strikeouts he would post in the game, as he would surrender just one more hit the rest of the way, along with one walk. Richardson went the distance to get the win.
The Spartans got the only runs of the game in their half of the second. Catcher Tracyion Hodge hit a line drive up the middle with one-out before Grady Bohm coaxed a full-count walk. Ryan Ferguson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, with two outs, for the lead-off man Ashton Hunt. The move paid off as Hunt got a two-out, two-rbi, triple that held up for the games only runs.
Ash started the game for Southern Boone and went five innings allowing two of the five Moberly hits. He also walked three batters. He was relieved by Kellen Schaller. The sophomore gave up three hits, and a walk while striking out one.
Hunt finished 2-for-2 with a walk.
Southern Boone ends the season at 24-9.
Moberly improves to 24-10, and will host Mexico(23-11) in Sectional action on Tuesday night. You can hear the game on Country 96.
