70 Downtown Groups Urge Urban Camping Ordinance

Dozens of downtown Columbia businesses are urging city leaders to adopt a clear urban camping ordinance.

In a letter co-signed by 70 businesses and organizations, The District asked the city council to create publicly accessible and enforceable rules addressing issues like sidewalk obstructions, public encampments and sanitation concerns.

The group says the proposal is not intended to criminalize homelessness and should be paired with outreach efforts, including shelter referrals, mental health services and substance-use support.
