Humane Society Won’t Operate at Proposed Shelter
The Central Missouri Humane Society says it will not provide animal care services at a proposed new municipal shelter in Columbia.
The Humane Society has provided animal care services for the city for decades, but says operating at two locations would not be financially or operationally sustainable.
Columbia and Boone County are proposing to purchase the former Columbia Animal Hospital property on East Boone Industrial Drive for nearly one million dollars and convert it into an animal shelter.
The city is seeking a new contractor for animal care services. Meanwhile, the Humane Society says it is moving forward with plans for its own new animal care campus, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
