Mid-Missouri Food Banks Prepare for Holiday Demand

Mid-Missouri food banks are preparing for increased demand as the holiday season approaches.

Fundraising events and food drives were held Tuesday in Columbia and Jefferson City to support families facing food insecurity.

The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri says it budgeted 20 percent more for food this fiscal year to meet growing needs.

The organization also reports more families seeking assistance for the first time, as rising grocery prices stretch household budgets.

In Jefferson City, the Samaritan Center partnered with Spirit FM for Missouri’s Biggest Food Drive, collecting canned goods and other nonperishable items.

Feeding America estimates one in six Missourians faces hunger, including one in five children.
