Energy Emergency Alert Issued for Columbia

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator or MISO has issued a Level 2 Energy Emergency Alert for the Columbia area from 4 to 8 p.m. According to a press release, the system is facing great demand for energy but reserves are thin.

They said that all power generating sources are being utilized by the City, but neighboring areas outside Columbia are experiencing difficulties.

MISO said that residents can help by reducing unneccessary electricity usage.

They recommended:
Setting thermostats high as possible while staying within reasonable comfort levels.
Leaving shades down over windows to block warming sunlight.
Turn off unused lights and appliances.
Try and wait to use kitchen and other major appliances until after 8 p.m.

They wrote that reducing energy usage during these times of high demand helps ease strain on the electrical grid.
