Columbia City Council to Discuss Plans for New Off-Campus Student Housing

The Columbia City Council is due to meet in regular session tonight at 6 p.m., rather than their common time of 7 p.m.

One of the main talking points at the meeting will be consideration for rezoning property to make way for a new student housing complex on the corner of College Avenue and University Avenue. In order for that to happen, the existing structures on the lot would be demolished, including University Place Apartments, according to a memo from the city council.

The city said the proposed design would be a 957 bedroom, 2 building development with 570 parking spaces.

If the proposal is approved, tenants already living on the lot will be allowed to renew their leases to end in the Spring of 2027, and then have a week to move out. The developer has stated that if the proposal moves through, they will let tenants know of lease renewals and vacate expectations in early 2027.
