Schmitt Files Brief With Supreme Court

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed an amicus brief today [Monday] in the Missouri Supreme Court seeking to end the practice of modern day debtors’ prisons.

In a statement, Schmitt says jail debts, or more commonly known as “board bills”, should not be collected using threats of jail time. The brief argues there is a clear and specific method for collection of jail debts through civil collection practices that does not include incarceration for an indigent individual unable to pay.
